Waila and Tamavua Water Treatment Plants Upgrade

  • Client: Fletcher Construction Fiji
  • Year: 2010-2011

The main contract was to upgrade Waila and Tamavua Water Purification Plants servicing the greater Suva district, awarded to Fletcher Construction Fiji.

In February 2010, Service Engineers Limited set up a fully owned subsidiary company in Fiji called Water and Waste Engineering Services Limited: specializing in the water treatment sector.  Water and Waste Engineering Services Limited started trading commercially at the Waila Water Treatment Plant in Nausori, Fiji in February 2010.
WWES's scope was for all mechanical engineering and manufacturing work at both Waila and Tamavua Plants. Service Engineers Limited had five of their employees working for WWES in Fiji as well as several Fijian contractors.

Challenges on the contract included constant planning for shipping: more than 75% of the contract's requirements were shipped from New Zealand and were required on a 'just in time' basis to avoid storage costs.  Setting up the new company in Fiji presented challenges with mountains of paperwork and familiarising ourselves with a different bureaucratic system from New Zealand.  However, the Fijian authorities were a great help with advice and swift processing of applications.
